Captain Frank's Smoke Shack is a must-visit barbecue restaurant nestled in the heart of Bayou La Batre, Alabama. Celebrated for its authentic Southern barbecue, this local gem offers a menu brimming with tender, smoky delights that beckon barbecue aficionados and casual diners alike. The inviting aroma of slow-smoked pork and ribs fills the air even before you step inside, setting the stage for a truly comforting and indulgent meal.
At Captain Frank's, ribs reign supreme — fall-off-the-bone tender with a perfect balance of smoky richness and savory glaze. The Pulled Pork Loaded Baked Potato is a standout dish, combining creamy, buttery potatoes topped generously with moist, pulled pork that’s infused with deep, smoky flavors. Other popular offerings like the BBQ Pork Sandwich and the Bayou Pig showcase the kitchen’s mastery over pork, delivering mouthwatering layers of texture and taste. The sides, including velvety coleslaw and hearty baked beans, complement the meats perfectly, offering a refreshing crunch and sweet earthiness that round out the meal.
Many visitors describe Captain Frank’s as a “hole in the wall” — but that’s part of its charm. The unpretentious, friendly atmosphere invites you to savor every bite in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Frequent guests like Amber A rave about the barbecue’s undeniable quality, calling it the best in Alabama, while travelers like Darrell and Jeredene Ollenberger appreciate the variety and perfectly executed sample platters featuring ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. The authenticity is palpable; even discerning barbecue lovers like Joseph Pendarvis, who smoke their own meats, find Captain Frank’s offerings “seriously delicious.”
While the brisket has received some mixed reviews regarding seasoning, the ribs and pulled pork consistently receive high praise for their moist texture and rich smoky flavor. Fans also enjoy the homemade sauces, which elevate each dish without overpowering the natural taste of the meat.

There is no words to describe how good barbecue is and their potatoes are so divine! Absolutely. The best barbecue I have had in the state of Alabama!! If you have not seen them yet, it is a must that you go asap
We full time travel and stop for BBQ where ever we can. We got the Sample order. It came with Ribs (fall off the bone tender), Brisket (moist tender with good smoke and a hint of sweet/sour flavor) , Pulled Pork (moist and tender) and Chicken (which was just fine). Included sides were Cole Slaw, Beans, Potato Salad, a Bun and two sauces. The Slaw was not sloppy and very tasty, the Beans good but we've had better. The Potato Salad was okay. The sauces were similar sweet sour but one had an excellent bite! The Sweet Tea serving was huge and it had just the right sweetness. Not syrupy. The service was friendly, the price for our meal was reasonable so we have no problem giving this "shack" a full five!
Friendly BBQ joint, we found it on our way back from exploring Dauphin Island. Stopped right before closing at around 4:45pm, ordered about 5lb of meat and finished 99% of it Very comforting. We tried full rack of ribs, brisket and pulled pork. The ribs are definitely our fav. Pulled pork is nice and moist. Brisket is a bit dry and probably needs a bit more seasoning penetration. BBQ sauce is tangy and flavorful. Take out only but there is a small area out front if you just can’t wait. Oh ya and coleslaw is delicious! Owners said they’ve been there for over 12 years! See photos for reference. Overall great food!
I feel like this place is a hole in the wall. Whenever I'm in Mobile, I always try my best to visit! I probably had this for the first time 4 years ago and it's always as good as that time. I love it! It is filling and you can definitely share.
I grill/ smoke brisket and turkey breast along with the staples. Captain Frank has seriously delicious smoked meats and really good sides. Well worth the trip to the Bayou.
1st time eating here, we both had BBQ sandwiches, I had the jumbo and the wife had the regular. The meat was very moist and tender and not drowning in BBQ sauce. They have numerous rewards displayed they have won for their gumbo, will definitely have to try it next time. They looked closed but were open. They close at 5:00 PM
Great Pulled pork sandwich and the potato salad is exceptional! The prices on the web site were not accurate but the meal was well worth the extra
